There is no more pleasurable feeling than leaving work, getting to your house, and finding it clean and perfect. True? The problem for many of us is that our working hours, most of the time, do not allow us to devote sufficient time to household chores. Or we just do not feel like cleaning because we got tired! If you feel identified with either of these two profiles, I assure you that you will like the Neato Botvac D5 Connected. We have done a thorough analysis of Neato Botvac D5 Connected which is an intelligent vacuum cleaner robot works with iOS App.
Neato Botvac D5 Connected, an Intelligent Robot Vacuum Cleaner with iOS App
Neato is one of the leading brands in the market for vacuum cleaners, and luckily for me, I have been able to try one of the stars in its catalog.
Over the years the brand has perfected its technology to provide these small gadgets with the sensors, connectivity and the autonomy necessary to turn them into powerful cleaning tools.
The Neato Botvac D5 Connected is a good proof of all that technological progress. With an autonomy of about 2 hours, Wireless connectivity and laser sensors, this robot suction allow us to clean almost autonomously the whole house. We can even program it to clean the house with a couple of beats.
Box contents Of Neato Botvac D5 Connected
In the box of Neato Botvac D5 Connected you will find all the accessories and tools you need to configure and maintain it, at least for a few months. Few times I have seen in a ” package” as many spare parts and accessories as those that Neato has included here, and that detail I liked, I will not deny.
Here is the list of the contents of the box of Neato Botvac Connected:
- Neato Botvac D5 Connected
- European and British network connection cable.
- 3 spare filters
- Cleaning comb
- USB cable to update the firmware
- Magnetic tape to delimit areas where it should not be cleaned
- Instruction manual
- Quick Setup Guide
- Neato Botvac D5 Connected Content Box
The first impression I took when I unboxed the Neato Botvac D5 Connected was very positive, starting from the base that I have already won with accessories and spare parts.
The quality of the finishes is outstanding. The top is slightly rough as you can see in the photos. The sides are made of smooth plastic, making it easy to clean. Important fact: I’ll tell you that the plastic of the chassis is really hard, because the robot has stuck a couple of good hits against a table while cleaning, and does not have a single mark.
If we pull the top we will access the filter drawer. Further down the maintenance section, I’ll tell you how to change it, but for now, you can already predict that it is the simplest thing in the world, and it allows us to reuse the filters several times without the problem.
Also at the top, we find the power button, a battery indicator, and a status or information indicator. Although the application is in charge of notifying us of any important event that happens to the Neato Botvac D5, it never hurts to have a visual way of knowing that everything works as it should.
In the box, I found a female micro USB to male USB adapter. I imagine it will serve to install the firmware updates manually, but I have not yet discovered where it connects. I think it’s in this doorway above the wiper blade, but I have no idea how to open it.
At first, I got scared because when I opened the box I found the British network adapter and I saw buying an adapter, but no, no need. In the box where all the accessories are stored there is a European adapter (male).
The load base has a slightly smaller width than the Neato Botvac D5 Connected, and height is a few centimeters higher. As you can see, it has two metal bars, which are responsible for transmitting the electric current to the robot, presumably by induction. However, in order to load the robot, it must do some force against them, and these will yield into the base. Which seems to be a correct security measure.
The manufacturer recommends giving a meter of margin per side to calibrate when cleaning starts, so that’s what I’ve done, and everything has gone from fable. The return option works great.
So yes, if you were wondering, the D5 has a “return” function to the base . When it is running out of battery it recharges again, and continues its work as soon as it is fully charged. Although you can also stop the cleaning process and send it back to your “home” to stop bothering you.
Powering on and configuring the app of Neato Botvac
The first thing we have to do to start the Neato Botvac D5 for the first time is to press the power button. It is advisable to start the robot next to the charging base (with the metal connectors towards the station). This way the D5 can return once the cleaning is finished and loaded automatically. It will start to sound (like a vacuum cleaner) and the indicators will blink.
For the initial configuration, we must download the Neato application from the App Store. It is free and the initialization takes few minutes.
In the first step, the app will ask you to choose the robot model that you are going to synchronize. In this case, we will select the Neato Botvac D5 Connected.
The second step is to put the Neato D5 in pairing mode. The instructions are very simple. We have an hour to link it with the application until it leaves the pairing mode.
The third step is to connect to the robot via WiFi. This will create an Ad-Hoc WiFi network that will be active for an hour, as we have said, You do not have a password. You just have to connect through iOS WiFi Settings and the app will recognize it instantly.
Once the robot is detected, the application will ask for the password of the WiFi network of the house. At this point I would have liked to have the possibility to connect it to several different wireless networks because in my case I have two routers on the same LAN, but with different ESSID. It would be logical to have a single WiFi network and extend it, so I can understand that the manufacturer did not contemplate it.
Once the whole process is finished, we will find the interface that you can see in the screenshot above.
The Neato Botvac D5 Connected app offers three controls :
- Pause: temporarily stops cleaning.
- Stop: stops the cleaning completely and enters the Neato in standby mode.
- Engage: tells Neato to return to the charging base. If we have not started the robot from the station, this option will remain disabled.
Below are other interesting options:
- If we press on the icon of the battery, we can consult the cleaning time that is left to the robot.
- From the statistics icon, we can keep track of cleaning time.
- From the configuration, we can change the WiFi network, the name of the robot and other interesting aspects.
- We can select the cleaning of a room or the whole house.
- We can select zones from the graphical interface.
- We can select cleaning days
- We can select the hours at which the routine begins
- It allows us to select or exclude different days of the week.
The app sends us notifications with the status of the Botvac D5 Connected: when it is stuck, is running out of battery or to tell us that the cleaning has finished.
Maintenance and cleaning of the Neato Botvac D5 Connected
Maintenance is fast. All you have to do is pull on the top cover, remove the box where you keep the box, remove the filter and throw the contents in the trash.
As you can see in the picture below, the box where the dirt is stored is considerably large, which gives it enough autonomy without asking for “human help” to empty it. Anyway, every 90 minutes or so, we will get an alert that it is time to change it.
At the bottom, there is the cleaning brush, which can also be replaced. It is typical that there we find long hairs hooked. In my case, I used a small scissors to cut and remove them, although the robot itself includes an accessory to clean it more comfortably.
As you can see in the picture above, the Neato Botvac D5 Connected has a small propeller that drags the dirt inwards, and that protrudes slightly from the body. This allows you to clean corners without a problem.
The wheels are made of rubber and can be cleaned very easily, just like the chassis. With a cotton suede, you can leave it as new and without dirt.
Neato Botvac D5 Connected Pros and Cons
- High autonomy
- Easy maintenance
- Cheap Spare Parts
- The application is sometimes not very intuitive
- It does not allow connecting to several WiFi networks in case a failure
My review of Neato Botvac D5 Connected
Looking at it with perspective, I have come to the conclusion that the Botvac D5 Connected is a very good product. Finishes, autonomy, connectivity and easy maintenance.
I honestly think it’s a good choice for anyone who works and does not have time to clean the house frequently, or for allergy sufferers who need a cleaner environment. You program it, and you forget it. If you need anything, it will notify you.
What I liked most without a doubt is its autonomy. It has been able to clean the entire house with only one load and has taken away a lot of dust accumulated on the floor. You can see from the photos that it has almost completely filled the box and that the floor was relatively clean. It gives me the feeling that it does clean in depth.
Another detail that I liked a lot is how well it circulates around the house without getting stuck. It has had some other problem with the cables that I have lying on the floor of the office, but I have realized that precisely for that are the magnetic tapes that it brings in the box. If we place them on the floor, the Neato Botvac D5 Connected will not pass through that area.
What I do recommend anyway, is to remove all possible obstacles, to do a more thorough cleaning. In my tests, I have removed carpets, some other chair and the desk wires that pass through the floor, and the result was much better.
I also liked to find spare parts on the Internet at a good price. I thought it would be complicated, or expensive, to change the filters and the brush, but the truth is that it is not.
Price and availability
The Neato Botvac D5 Connected has a recommended price of 649.99 euros on Amazon, where you will have this model with a single replacement for the filter.
In my opinion, the Neato Botvac D5 Connected is one of the most intelligent vacuum cleaners you can find on the market. With the iOS app, we can control it remotely, and that makes it a very useful and convenient home tool to keep the house clean at all times, with little effort.
